外形特徵
灶鳥科共有59屬，約240種，588多個亞種。分布局限於中美洲和南美洲。是形態最為多歧的類群之一，有多種體型及俗名。雖然該科其中大多數的鳥是將巢建在地洞內或岩石裂隙中，但由於幾個著名種類的營巢習性，整個科乃得名“灶鳥”（ovenbird）。灶鳥其外形、生境和食性分別類似百靈、鷦鷯、山雀、鶇和鶯，但該科鳥的骨骼和肌肉有共同特點。大多數種類褐到赤褐色，在翅下有赤褐色條紋。灶鳥科屬小到中型鳥類，體長從10至35厘米。它們具有短而圓的翅膀，腿和腳經常強而有力，尾巴上小軸的羽毛最也長最重要；鳥體羽毛大多是深色，一般為褐色、灰色、黑色、橄欖色和紅色。

生活習性
該類物種幾乎全都棲息於新熱帶，它們居住在南美洲和中美洲，最北達墨西哥南部。在該地區的城市公園內生活，一部分活動於亞馬遜盆地。有些種類也分布於溫帶貧瘠的安第斯山脈高地，甚至有2種抖尾地雀居住在海岸岩石上，並在海邊衝浪。灶鳥一般都在森林的地面搜尋昆蟲等食物，海邊生活的則在退潮時啄食暴露出的貽貝。
