地下莖（竹鞭）無通氣道，或偶可有少數通氣道。竿的節內一般長約3毫米。籜鞘通常有斑點或只在小筍中可無斑點；籜片披針形，線形或帶狀，外翻，平直或皺曲，在筍的上部散開，偶可不散開而呈筆頭狀，籜片基部狹於籜舌。花枝穗狀；佛焰苞之縮小葉呈小形葉片狀；小穗長約2.5-3.5厘米，稀可較短[如紫竹P. nigra (Lodd.) Munro]；外稃長約1.5-2.5厘米（紫竹可能較短）；花葯長7-15毫米；花柱長在10毫米以上。
模式種：桂竹Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. et Zucc.
計40種，分布與屬相同。
