The first sentence of paragraph 2 is a very long sentence. Here “that looks matter little” means “looks are of little importance or don’t make much different”. And there is a word “for” in this sentence. I think it means “because” at here. But “because” looks more directory than “for” as the reason.
In the paragraph 3, there is a sentence “like it or not”. In my opinion, if it become “whether you like or not”, it is understood easily. There are two words “were” and “would” in the last sentence. They are the past forms. The expressions of book, which is “if … want to …” .
