概述
the beatles在1995年到1997年陸續發行了anthology系列雙專輯，分別為anthology1、anthology2和anthology3，因為是雙專輯，所以共分為六碟。
系列專輯分為三部分，分別對應了早中晚三個時期的披頭士樂隊。
從這套專輯中我們可以看到披頭士風格和創作理念的變化，大量的demo和半成品歌曲見證了披頭士12張錄音室專輯的形成過程，從而加深了樂迷對這支史上最偉大搖滾樂隊的認識。
系列1
唱片封面anthology1發行於1995年11月20日，收錄了披頭士1958年到1964年10月18日為發行的曲目，另外特別收錄了Jhon Lenonn創作的free as a bird作為打榜單曲。
Free as a bird獲得了1996年第39屆葛萊美獎的最佳音樂錄影獎項，同時也讓樂隊獲得年度最佳流行組合獎!
Free As A Bird
單曲封面free as a bird完全由約翰列儂創作，並在1977年錄製了一個demo。1995年，列儂遺孀小野洋子將這首歌的母帶交給保羅麥卡特尼，麥卡特尼與另外兩位披頭士成員協同製作人Jeff Lynne重新混縮了這首歌曲，並且加上了披頭士其他成員的聲音，使它真正成為了披頭士整體創作的作品。
這首歌曲旋律鮮明，配合有Ringo的細密清晰的鼓點，副歌部分被麥卡特尼重新演繹效果非凡
這首歌的單曲碟在第一個星期賣出了120000張，在英國單曲榜取得了2的佳績，在榜8周；Billboard Hot 100上取得了6名次，這也成為了披頭士樂隊在美國的第34支top10單曲，最終單曲獲得了金唱片認證。

這張專輯在Billboard200空降為冠軍，在6周內就取得了美國唱片協會的3白金銷售認證，最終在美國達到了破天荒的8白金銷售認證！在英國榜，專輯不敵瑪麗亞凱莉的daydream屈居亞軍，但最終獲得了2白金的銷售認證。

唱片封面借著anthology1銷售火熱的東風，anthology2於1996年3月18日在全球發行。和anthology1一樣，anthology2也是一張暢銷的唱片。專輯收錄了1965年2月16日到1968年2月6日披頭士錄製的、未發行的作品，並且重新製作了約翰列儂的real love作為打榜的單曲。
real love
單曲封面real love完全由約翰列儂創作，列儂在1979年到1980年錄製了6個take，第六個take在1988年列儂的傳記電影《想像：約翰列儂的理想生活》作為開頭結尾的主題音樂，但是音質較為粗糙。
1995年，保羅麥卡特尼拿到了real love的母帶，和另外兩位披頭士成員及Jeff Lynne對其進行了重新混縮，加入了三人的聲音，使它成為了beatles的整體作品。
這首歌在英國榜和美國榜分別拿下了#4和#11，雖然成績遜色於free as a bird，但依然是一首極為優秀的作品，最終獲得了金唱片的銷量認證。

在美國，專輯迅速成為了#1，一周后滑落至#2，在top10內待了4周，Billboard 200總共堅持了22周，出榜後有兩次重新回榜，並且在聖誕節期間仍然保持在了#96的位子上，最終在美國取得了4白金的銷量認證；在英國，專輯總共在榜37周，這個成績要好於anthology1，在英國榜取得了冠軍，披頭士再一次在自己的家鄉取得了勝利！
