Firstly, we see a phrase-“laying one’s cards right on the table”. It means “make frank and clear revelation”. For example, they asked Smith to put his cards on the table. We can see another word-“work”. For example, he worked a request for money into the conversation.
Then, let me analyze this sentence. “I’ll lay … and confess” is the major sentence. “that … long distance” is the follow sentence. Following sentence is a complicated sentence. There are two clauses-“I not .. and months” and “but I also .. long sentence”.
