BornintoawealthyfamilyinTianjinin1915,YangmethisfuturewifeGladysTaylerin1936attheMertonCollege,Oxford,wherehewasstudying.
GladysYangspentherearlychildhoodinChinaasthedaughterofamissionaryandlaterenrolledintoChinesestudiesatOxford.
Despiteoppositionfromhermother,thetwogotengaged,andreturnedtoChinain1940togetmarried,althoughtheywereawarethattheYangfamilyhadnomoneyleftandthatthecountrywasfacedwithwarsandpoverty.
Theymadealivingascollegeteachersandtranslators,andwerehappydespitetheodds.
WhenChiangKai-shekretreatedtoTaiwanin1949,theYangsalsoweregivenplaneticketstofollow,buttheystayedbehindontheChinesemainland,becausetheybelievedtheCommunistPartywouldbeabetterchoicefortheChinesethantheKuo-mintang.
TheybecamerespectedtranslatorsinNewChina,butasChinawasdraggedintothemadnessofthe"culturalrevolution"(1966-76),thecouplewasimprisonedfortheirindependentviewsasintellectuals.
Beginningin1968,theyspentfouryearsindifferentjails,withoutanyideaaboutoneanotherorthelivesoftheirsonandtwodaughters,whowerealsounfairlytreated.Thesoncommittedsuicidein1979inBritain.
ButtheirloveforeachotherandChineseculturesurvived,andtheyworkedwithgreatpassionaftertheirjailtime.
