李兆平是國際著名的計算神經科學專家。計算神經科學用物理、生命科學、數學、 計算機、工程等綜合方法和觀點來研究腦的認知、學習和意識等功能。她在大腦功 能中的視覺、嗅覺、記憶、學習、信號處理、神經網路和運動控制等方向都做有研 究。在上世紀90年代末和本世紀初提出了“視覺初皮層注意顯著圖”的理論。該理論 的概念超出了傳統觀念（包括1980年諾貝爾獎的工作）的範圍，因其涉及大腦注意 和視覺中的主要功能，又取得了近期一些實驗的支持，引起學術界的極大注意。該 理論將對大腦尤其是視覺功能的理解和研究產生新的方向性推動.
從2008年起，李兆平在我校開設了國內第一個全系統的計算神經科學課程。2009年 7月在我校召開了首屆北京計算神經科學國際研討會。近期又在我校建立了計算神 經實驗室，以帶動結合數理、工程和腦科學的交叉學科研究。
