生於英格蘭，12歲時隨家遷居美國，後入讀奧克蘭大學新聞系。1976年開始與吉姆．漢森合作多部電視木偶戲，得到觀眾的熱烈歡迎，陸續榮獲三次艾美獎。1979年主演了電影《木偶電影》，以後在他升任導演期間也曾演過幾部影片，如《龍虎雙霸天》、《美國狼人在倫敦》等。1983年與漢森聯合導演了木偶電影《魔水晶》，開始踏入導演之門。他的導演作品大都走喜劇路線，如《騙心大少》，《天生一對寶》、《大制騙家》等。2001年執導了犯罪動作片《大買賣》，擁有馬龍．白蘭度等幾位巨星的強大演員陣容。
