東漢末年孫權想取回荊州，周瑜獻計“假招親扣人質”。諸葛亮識破，安排趙雲陪伴前往，先拜會周瑜的岳父喬玄，喬玄說動吳國太在甘露寺見面，吳國天真的將孫尚香嫁給劉備。孫權與周瑜被人嘲笑“周郎妙計安天下，賠了夫人又折兵”。
三國時，荊州地處西川與東吳之間，是重要的兵家必爭之地。當初，劉備窘迫時，向東吳“借”荊州以棲身，休養勢力。後稍有恢復，東吳便再三索要荊州，劉備當然不會把自己的惟一立足之地放棄掉，也便以各種理由再三推拖。東吳的大都督周瑜十分氣惱，便想用計取回荊州。
一天，聽得劉備夫人新喪，周瑜頓時心生一計，對東吳大將魯肅說：“我有計策了！必使劉備老老實實地把荊州交回來！”
魯肅問：“什麼計？”
“劉備喪妻，必將續娶。我知主公有一妹妹，剛武英豪。可假意以招婿為名，賺劉備來東吳成婚。一旦他來，則囚入牢室。再派人去討荊州以換劉備。他們必然交還荊州。之後，放與不放、殺與不殺，不全憑我們隨便處置了嗎？！”
魯肅覺得這個計策甚好，表示贊同，便對東吳之主孫權說了此計，孫權也同意。於是派大臣呂范到荊州去做媒，說：“近日劉備夫人病逝。我有一妹，想招劉備為婿。永結姻緣，同心破曹，以扶漢室。這做媒的事，我看你去說最好。請你走一趟吧！”
呂范領命，以媒人身份來到荊州。
再說劉備，中年喪妻，他很煩惱悲哀。這天正和諸葛孔明閒談解悶，忽報東吳派呂范來了。孔明笑道：“一定是周瑜為要荊州，又有什麼計謀了。我在帳後躲起來，無論呂范說什麼，您都答應下來。然後我們再商量對策。”
劉備於是接見呂范。
呂范先對劉備表示慰問，然後就講清來意：“人若無妻，就像房屋沒了梁一樣。所以我不避嫌疑，特來做媒。”接著就把東吳要招劉備為婿的事及此事對劉、孫兩家政治軍事上的意義都認真誠摯地說出來。最後道：“因為吳太夫人特別疼愛這個最小的女兒，不願意遠嫁，所以請皇叔去東吳舉行婚禮。”
“這事，你們主公知道嗎？”劉備問。
呂范笑道：“這種事，不先徵得吳侯同意，怎敢隨便來說呢？”
劉備以年齡相差太大等理由婉拒。但呂范是個非常稱職又熱心撮合的媒人，一再勸說。最後劉備沒理由推辭了，就說：“請您先住下來，我明天告訴您最後的決定。”
到晚上，劉備與孔明細商此事。孔明十分高興，勸劉備答應這門親事，並馬上要派孫乾和呂范回見孫權，商定娶親事宜，擇日就婚東吳。
劉備絕非平庸之輩，因此，不解地望著孔明道：“這肯定是周瑜的計謀，我怎么能草率地身入虎穴呢？！”
孔明笑道：“周瑜雖能用計，但怎能出乎我所料？！主公放心，我略施小計，保管使周瑜一籌莫展、孫權之妹成為主公之妻，而荊州又萬無一失！”
劉備雖相信孔明的神機妙算，但對隻身入虎穴的危險仍存疑俱，很是猶豫。孔明道：“我已定下三條妙計，再讓趙子龍保主公過江，絕不會有差錯的！”隨即把趙雲找來，安排了任務，又交給他三個錦囊：“你保主公入吳，可依次按這三個錦囊內之計行事。”
於是，在建安十四年冬十月（公元209年），劉備由趙雲、孫乾陪同，進入吳國境地。剛到吳境的第一個城市南徐，趙雲就按孔明吩咐打開了第一個錦囊。看罷，就命令隨行的五百名士兵，一個個披紅掛綠到市上購買各種婚禮所需要的物件，同時大肆宣揚劉皇叔要與孫公主即將成親的訊息。東吳士官百姓聞聽，更代為傳播，立時，這喜慶訊息就傳向吳國所屬各地。趙雲又代劉備準備了豐厚禮品，教劉備主動拜訪喬國老。
喬國老在吳國是舉足輕重的人物。他的兩個女兒，一個嫁給孫權的哥哥孫策，一個嫁給了周瑜；兩個女婿，一個是吳國開國之主，一個是正掌大權的都督，由此可知喬國老的“一斑”了！
劉備登門拜訪，使喬國老大為開心，卻又為如此大事自己這個“國老”卻沒有被告知而大為惱火。送走劉備後，便從南徐州趕到都城去見孫權的母親吳國太。一進門就氣哼哼地沖吳國太道喜。
國太一怔：“有什麼喜事呀？”
國老道：“國內都已傳遍，您的貴婿也到我門上來過了，為什麼還要瞞我？！”
國太大驚：“竟有此事？！”忙派人把孫權叫來質問，並派人到城中探聽。
派到城中探聽的人先回來了，報告：“確有此事。女婿已在驛館安歇，五百隨行軍士正在城中購買豬羊果品，準備成親。做媒的女家是呂范，男方是孫乾。”
國太一聽，頓足捶胸大哭。此時，孫權進見母親。國太怒氣沖沖責問：“你心裡還有我嗎？！女兒是我生我養，你招劉備為婿，這么大的事為什麼瞞著我？！”
孫權嚇了一跳，沒想到母親已知此事。不得已，才向國太說出真情：不過是條計策，只為了把劉備騙到東吳，好以此要挾、討還荊州。並不是真要把妹妹嫁給劉備。
國太一聽更火了，大罵周瑜道：“你這個堂堂六郡八十一州大都督，怎么這樣沒出息？！沒本事取荊州，卻用我女兒為名，使美人計！殺了劉備，我女兒就是望門寡，以後還怎么再嫁人？！”接著又怒斥孫權：“你們這幫沒本事的傢伙，做的好事！”
孫權平日孝敬母親，此刻只能默默無聲。
喬國老也不大平：“就算用這條計取了荊州，也會被天下人恥笑。這怎么行？！”
孫權羞慚不已。
喬國老又說下去：“事已至此，也只能招劉備為婿了，免得出醜。”
孫權忙反對：“兩個年齡恐怕不相當吧！”
喬國老已對劉備有好感，就爭辯：“劉備是大漢皇叔，當今英雄，有何不可？”
國太道：“明天我先見見劉備。他若不中我意，此事聽你們去做。若中我的意，就把女兒真嫁給他！”
孫權無奈，只得答應。但預先在會見地點埋伏下刀斧手，一旦國太不滿意劉備，馬上拿下他。
不料，第二天在甘露寺，吳國太一見相貌堂堂、打扮齊整的劉備就喜歡得很，對喬國老讚嘆：“這真是配做我女婿的人！”
喬國老在其間更大讚劉備人品才能。於是國太一錘定音：擇日定親。
孫權悻悻地，只有聽任國太。
劉備回館驛後，孫乾又要他馬上再見喬國老：請求早日完婚——因為東吳多有欲害劉備的人。
喬國老又面吳國太，國太十分氣憤：“我的女婿，誰敢殺害？！”便命劉備搬入宮中，住在自己身邊，並同意趙雲所率五百士兵也陪住進來。
緊接著，國太就為劉備與自己的女兒舉行了盛大的婚禮。
周瑜聞聽此事，懊惱不已。他又心生一計，要孫權軟禁劉備於宮中，提供錦衣美食、音樂歌女，企圖軟化劉備志向，讓他貪戀享樂，不思回荊州。然後，再伺機挑撥他與關張二人的關係，疏遠他與諸葛亮的情感。最後，再用計奪回荊州。總之，絕不可讓劉備再跑回去！
於是孫權依計而行：修建豪華宮室與劉備夫婦居住；花木玩物，無所不盡其美艷珍奇；歌女樂師，昌均是色藝絕佳的人選；至於金玉錦繡、車馬服飾，更是應有盡有、極盡豐厚。
劉備於長年戰場奔勞間，猛入溫柔富貴之境，果然樂而忘返，沉迷酒色之中。
趙雲見狀，甚憂慮。按孔明所說，於年終又拆開第二個錦囊。他看過之後，急匆匆來到正聽看歌舞的劉行面前：“今早接孔明來報，曹操起精兵五十萬，殺奔荊州而來！軍情十分緊急，請主公馬上回荊州！”
劉備雖戀享樂，但還不沉迷。一聽荊州危險，也吃驚。但又捨不得離開孫夫人。
趙雲於是有意地幾次三番催促劉備。
劉備更加為難，常面容悲戚。
孫夫人已探知內情，便果斷地說：“大丈夫立世，不可只顧兒女私情，妾已是夫君的人，你無論到何處，我都跟你去！”
劉備很高興，夫妻二人於是商定：以到江邊祭祖為名，離開吳境，潛回荊州。
到了元旦，夫妻二人給國太拜年。之後，孫夫人代劉備說：“祖宗父母之墳在涿郡，想到江邊，望北遙祭，以表人子之情。”
“這是孝道。當然可以！”國太以愛戴的眼光望著劉備，立刻答應。
於是，當天下午，劉備、孫夫人及趙雲所帶五百士兵，瞞著孫權，悄悄向長江岸邊進發。
第二天，孫權得知劉備走脫，忙派將領率兵去追。周瑜惟恐劉備逃跑，也一直派兵在必經之路防守。結果，劉備前後受敵，被追兵團團圍住，情勢萬分危險。
