《埃爾塞: 將近改變世界的人》講述的是刺殺希特勒事件，但影片裡的史實比《行動目標希特勒》要早幾年。1939年。希特勒差一點被一個名叫埃爾塞的木匠幹掉。那一年，希特勒的權力正在逐漸邁向頂峰，當大多數人都在狂熱崇拜之時，埃爾塞成了少數幾個的正義鬥士。在精密的計畫之下，他在希特勒演講的講台附近設定一個定時炸彈。可惜的是，希特勒的演講結束得太早，炸彈引爆時希特勒已經不在現場。埃爾塞在當年11月遭到了納粹的逮捕，遭處決。影片講述了一段驚心動魄的故事，本土演員的演出保持了原汁原味 。

本片由2大部分組成：主角浪漫的個性和回憶與現實世界的冰冷環境。
浪漫的個性由elser唱的歌貫穿始終，他始終活在自己浪漫的內心之中，他不在乎道德也不在乎黨派、理想。他是一個活在自己世界裡的人。他只相信自己認為對的事。所以直到最後，警察總長仍然認為他是一個妄想症患者。對於elser來說，他的世界裡他就是元首。追求女孩，放蕩不羈，他敢於在小鎮上和有婦之夫相愛之後還住到對方家裡，他敢於在納粹突擊隊帶走朋友的時候站出來，都表明他不在乎別人的想法。
另一方面，是整個世界在急速的變化。這種變化並沒有在一夕之間，而是穿插在生活的點滴之中，首先是納粹黨獲勝了，之後是共產黨被解散，然後是共產黨被抓捕，教堂被炸毀，天主教徒被嘲笑，進而是猶太人，隨後是和猶太熱親近的人。值得一提的是奔羊節里放電影前的演講，這個片段真實反映了希特勒上台後德國民眾的感受：他們真的看到了希特勒對國家的改革，得到了實惠。這個片段還有一個細節，同是共產黨員的一個人穿上了納粹的衣服，回想起之前被剃頭折磨的另一個人簡直天壤之別。這引起了我一些思考：如果在你受盡折磨和威脅，家人也難倖免的時候，只要簽一個字就可以免除一切痛苦，並且加官進爵，不會傷害任何人。你會如何選擇？
冰冷現實的高潮來自於5年以後，1945的絞刑。審判者警察總長先生自己也被吊死在絞架上。導演用了一段長鏡頭表現他被吊死的全過程。整體畫面好似油畫一樣靜止，所有的人和物都沒有動，只有受害者的雙腿在抖動，而且一再掙扎，總是在觀眾以為停止的時候又再跳起。整段過程一氣呵成，最後除去髒褲子的細節也被還原。
最後，希特勒驚人的讓這個主謀活到了帝國倒塌的一步。可以說這源自於他的浪漫——想讓這個反對自己的人親眼見到自己帶領德意志民族走向輝煌。然而當一切塵埃落定的時候，他決不能讓這個人活著。看到這裡我不禁在想，如果elser和希特勒做個對調會發生什麼？我忽然想起了我國的建國之君……一切都讓人不斷回味。
