演藝經歷
約翰·古德曼1975年遷居紐約，分別在外百老匯和百老匯登台表演。1985年，《哈克貝歷·費恩歷險記》第一次被改編成音樂喜劇，古德曼有幸參加了表演，扮演派普·費恩。
從1989-1990季至今，先後13次主持頗受觀眾喜愛的“星期六夜線”電視節目，也拍過一些電視廣告片，1983年正式涉足影壇，開始在多部影片中擔任配角，類型從硬漢、殺手到精神病患者不一而同，直至1991年的《英王拉爾夫》 (King Ralph)才首度出任主角。同年憑《巴頓·芬克》(Barton Fink)一片揚威坎城影展。
1994年，古德曼主演電影版《石頭城樂園，又譯聰明笨伯》(The Flintstones)的拍攝，被認為是該片成功開拍的關鍵性人物，因為如果他拒絕出演男主角弗雷德的話，影片拍攝計畫就一定會被暫時雪藏起來。結果，《石頭城樂園》創下了不俗的票房成績。古德曼既扮演過英國國王，也扮演過美國總統，在電影裡過足了政治癮。
電視劇方面，約翰·古德曼以情景喜劇《Roseanne》最為出彩，曾先後5次入圍金球獎，8次入圍艾美獎，1993年終於捧回一座金球獎。2001年有他參與配音的《怪物公司》(Monsters Inc.)又是一部票房巨作，古德曼從那之後接了很多配音工作。
個人生活
2003年，古德曼戒了煙。2005年，醫生命令他減肥，古德曼遇到戒菸以來最大的一次人生挑戰。後居住在路易斯安那州的紐奧良。
