人物生平
梅維恆(Victor H. Mair)教授,1943年出生。
早年畢業於達特茅斯學院。於1965年加入美國和平隊(US Peace Corps),在尼泊爾服役兩年。1967年秋,他進入華盛頓大學學習印度佛經、中印佛教、藏文及梵文。翌年,他留學英國倫敦大學亞非學院,學習梵文。後來,他入哈佛大學東亞語言及文明系深造,於1976年獲得博士學位,並留校任教。1979年起,他轉任賓夕法尼亞大學。他現為賓大亞洲及中東研究系教授、賓大學考古及人類學博物館顧問,同時也在京都大學、香港大學、北京大學、四川大學等多所高校兼任教職。

梅維恆教授的研究領域包括中國語言文學、中古史、敦煌學。
主要成就
他的《唐代變文:佛教對中國白話小說及戲曲產生的貢獻之研究》、《繪畫與表演:中國的看圖講故事和它的印度起源》、《敦煌通俗敘事文學作品》等諸多著作都在中西學界引起了強烈反響。梅維恆教授轉向在中國新疆塔克拉瑪乾沙漠進行考古研究,發現了塔克拉瑪乾沙漠迄今為止最早的文明遺蹟。這個生存於公元前2000年至公元200年間的文明,為重新理解中國歷史、中西交通、歐亞文化交流史開啟了新的視角。
