1958年～1964年 北京大學數學力學系本科。
1964年～1968年 北京大學數學力學系研究生。
1980年～1983年 英國劍橋大學博士(PhD)。
1968年～1979年 一機部所屬廠所，設計及研究工程師。
1980年～1983年 英國劍橋大學訪問學者。
1984年 美國Brown大學研究人員。
1984年～1991年 北京大學力學系教授、博士生導師、固體力學教研室主任。
1991年 英國劍橋大學，皇家學會訪問學者。
1992年～1995年3月 英國曼徹斯特理工大學(UMIST) 機械工程系教授(Reader)。
1995年4月～至今 香港科技大學機械工程系教授。
歷任第一機械工業部所屬工廠及研究所工程師(1970-1979)，北京大學力學系教授、博士生導師(1984-1991)，英國曼徹斯特理工大學(UMIST) 機械工程系教授(1991-1995)。1995年4月加入香港科技大學，任機械工程系講座教授，並先後擔任工學院副院長（1998-2000）、機械工程系系主任（2002-2007）、香港科技大學協理副校長（2006-2010）、霍英東研究院院長（2007-2010）。現為香港科技大學榮休教授、香港科技大學副校長(研究與研究生教育)的資深顧問，新加坡南洋理工大學訪問教授，浙江大學包玉剛講座教授，寧波大學包玉剛講座教授。同時，也是中國工程物理研究院、中科院力學所、中國科技大學、北京航空航天大學、西北工業大學、大連理工大學、北京理工大學、四川大學、武漢大學、香港城市大學等國內外十餘所院校的顧問教授或客座教授。

研究工作主要集中於衝擊動力學、塑性力學、結構與材料的能量吸收、複合材料與多胞材料等領域。編寫出版了《塑性力學》（2010年再版易名為《工程塑性力學》）、《工程材料及其力學行為》、《結構塑性動力學引論》及《衝擊動力學》等四部教材；著有《塑性彎曲理論及其套用》，《塑性結構的動力學模型》和《材料與結構的能量吸收》等三部專著（都有英文版在國外出版）；發表了學術期刊論文330篇（大都為SCI收錄）、國際會議論文200篇、專利4項。
