First,acoupleofbiasesofmineshouldbeexplained.Idon'tgotostageplays,soIstillgetTennesseeWilliamsandTennesseeErnieFordconfusedsometimes.AndIstayawayfrommovieswithscenesofpeoplearguingendlesslyfornogoodreason.Andfinally,Iusuallyfindfakeaccentsannoying,especiallywhentheyarebadlydonesoutherndrawlsthatseemtofadeinandout.AnofthisexamplewouldbetheTVseries"IntheHeatoftheNight".EveryNewYorkorCaliforniaactorseemstothinktheycanjustaddalittletwangtotheirvoiceandbecomeaconvincingSoutherner.
Thefilmisakindofstagey,blackandwhite,1950's"sexcomedy"abouta40-ishman(KarlMalden)whowantshisteenagewife(CarrolBaker)tosleepwithhim,butshewon't.Maldenlaterburnsdownacompetitor's(EliWallach)cottongin.TheWallachcharacterthenstealsMalden'swife'saffectionsaswellashiscottonginaspayback.That'stheentireplot.Thereisnothingbutarguinggoingonduringtheother95%ofthemovie.Endlessargumentstomeareasuresignthatthewriterhasrunoutofideas.IadmitthatIhadtoturnthesoundoffabout30minutesintothemovieandjustwatchthecaptionsbecausethephonysouthernaccentsweresoooooannoying,especiallyduringtheextendedargumentscenes.
Ithoughttheactorswereallextremelyunappealing,especiallytheleadBabyDollcharacter.Whatacarwreck!Theaudienceissupposedtolikeher,butIhavenoideawhy,exceptpossiblypityorlust.Sheisapparentlyirresistabletothelocalmen,becausewhenshegoesoutinpublic,therearealwaysshotsofdroolingslackjawedyokelswatchingher.Iguessthisissotheaudiencewillknowshe'sreallysexy,incasetheyhadn'tyetnoticed.
Thehumorwasflatterthana50yearoldcanofbeer.Anauntlivingwiththecouplescreamswhenthephoneringsbecauseshe'safraidofit.Blackcottonginworkerssitaroundinheshadeandlaughhystericallyatthemaincharactersduringtheirendlessarguments.Iguessthisissotheaudiencewillknowtheargumentisfunny,incasetheyhadn'tyetnoticed.Thehousefallsapartfromtimetotime.Andtherearesomeoldhounddogswhofollowtheactorsaroundwhiletheyarguewitheachother,butunfortunatelythedogsareusuallythemostinterestingthingonthescreen.
Watchingtheextrafeaturesonthedisc,itappearsthatthismoviewasverycontroversialin1956whenreleased,andwaspulledfromdistributionduetoits"pornographic"content.However,allthiscontroversydidnothingtoimprovethequalityofthemovie.50yearslateritstilllacksanyseriousliterary,artistic,political,orscientificvalue.Ifoundthefilmispatentlyoffensiveduetoitsflaccid1950'sstylesexualpandering,unappealingcharacters,endlessarguing,datedhumor,andreallyannoyingphonysouthernaccents.
