unit2 17-18

ten then ten

Today I read the passage 17and 18.In the first sentence,I puzzled with the word “triumph”.Firstly,I guess that it is a noun, and then in term of the meaning in this sentence ,in my opinion, the meaning is about success. At last,I look it up in the dictionary,as I expected,”triumph”means an important victory or success after a difficult struggle.I feel a little bit happy as I guess the meaning of the difficult word.It is an efficient approach for me to understand the article better and improve my reading ability.

I continue reading. The word “proclaim” stop(s )me.I know the word “claim” ,it means “declare”,but, put “pro” in front of the “claim”make me confused. Then I look it up in the LONGMAN Dictionay. As a result,it has the same meaning as “claim”,but it usually use to say publicly or officially. That means “proclaim”is more formal than “claim”.

Keep going,---“detain”,I don’t see the word before. There are several meanings in the dictionary, the second meaning attracts me:[usually passive] formal to stop someone from leaving as soon as they expected [=delay]:I think it is the proper meaning in this section.
