unit2 10~11

ten ten atten

In paragraphs 10~11, the Narcissistic showoffs are discussed. From the context, we know some characteristics of this type of showoffs. And I’m bewildered by the sentence----they don’t even notice there’s anyone there to compete with. What does the second “there” mean? I know “there” as an adverb have [has]many meanings. I wonder whether it means “if something exists?” Meanwhile, my classmate asked the same question to Mr. Deng. We discuss[discussed] and finally have[had] a conclusion. It means “in or to a particular place”. A phrase “all of sudden” means unexpectedly, suddenly.

Another sentence also confused me-----they’ll even go stand on their head if attention should flag. Why the author uses “should”? I read it again and find[found]---- they’ll even go stand on their head----[is]in an exaggerated way. In grammar, it is a subjunctive mood.

In the next paragraph, it describes a person who is a narcissistic showoff. He is dark and disappointed when the conversation shifted[shifts] from his accomplishment.

Indeed, what a pity of someone live[living] in such a showoff life. He/her[She] will don’t know the others [others']advantages and never make progress because he only wants to keep the attention every time and everywhere. But we all know it is impossible as no man is perfect.
