人物經歷
鮑曼於1925年出生在波蘭西部波茲南一個貧苦的猶太家庭，這個家庭承受著貧窮和反猶太的痛苦，這些在後來的學術生涯中，都為鮑曼提供了直接的思考對象。1939年，二戰爆發，鮑曼全家逃亡蘇聯。1943年，18歲的鮑曼參加了在蘇聯的波蘭軍隊，戰後，鮑曼升為上尉，不久又被升為上校，就是在這個時期，鮑曼開始攻讀社會學的學位，師從波蘭當時的知名學者奧索夫斯基和霍施菲爾德。這時的鮑曼可謂仕途一片光明，但他沒有料到，在1953年的反猶太清洗中，他成了犧牲品，被突然撤消職務。他是一個熱忱的共產主義者，他被共產主義的承諾強烈吸引著，他願意作一個為崇高事業奮鬥的戰士。
鮑曼經歷了希望，也飽嘗了失望。從軍隊下來後，鮑曼就開始了他的學術生涯，他於1954年起在華沙大學哲學與社會科學系任教，50年代末去倫敦經濟學院呆了一年，1961年，升為助理教授，並擔任波蘭最有名的社會學雜誌《社會學研究》雜誌編輯委員會的主任；1966年，鮑曼擔選波蘭社會學協會執行委員會的主席。
2017年1月9日，著名思想家齊格蒙特·鮑曼（Zygmunt Bauman）於位於英國的家中去世，享年91歲。
