1963年，在《了不起的蓋茨比》(The Great Gatsby)中扮演雪歌妮·霍華德一角後，她把自己的名字改成了現在的樣子。此前，她已經在學校戲劇作品《仲夏夜之夢》(A Midsummer Night's Dream)中演過女主角。1965年，和一家劇團合作，在《欲望號街車》等藝術作品中出演角色。1967年中學畢業後，她在以色列的集體農莊裡呆了幾個月時間，和記者亞倫·拉薩姆訂婚，不久又解除婚約。1969年進入史丹福大學，專修英語文學，在校期間參與學校戲劇表演。1973年遇到一隊富有才華的編劇和演員，之後經常跟著他們。耶魯大學畢業後，雪歌妮認真開拓自己的舞台表演事業，但身高問題仍然阻礙著她的發展。1979到1981年間，她和克里斯多弗·杜拉合作創作了戲劇《Das Lusitania Songspiel》並一連主演了兩季，開始引起人們關注，她還因此獲得了一個戲劇獎。70年代中期，她先後參加了幾部電視作品的演出。
