《我的任務》主要內容簡介：The China Society for People's Friendship Studies （PFS） in coopera-tion with the Foreign Languages Press （FLP） in Beiiing has arrangedfor re-publication, in the series entitled Light on China, of some fifty bookswritten in English between the 1860s and the founding years of the People'sRepublic, by journalistic and other sympathetic eyewitnesses of the revo-lutionary events described. Most of these books have long been out of print,but are now being brought back to life for the benefit of readers in Chinaand abroad.

"But what does that achieve from the standpoint of justice？ Your trialscould be attended by the public in limitless numbers without in the leastaffecting the conduct of a judge who happened to be prejudiced, or of abiased jury chosen from a special class. And if a prosecutor wished to bringforth perjured testimony from witnesses who had been told what to say, thepresence of the public could not prevent him. "Nor is your press likely to raise an outcry or even give passing attentionto such injustices where the victim has been sufficiently denounced beforehand.In contrast, it is the duty of our Examination Committees, as the people'srepresentatives, to seek out and correct any abuses in a trial, and we have thepower to do so." Chen maintained that the arrests and trials of these gangsters asKuomintang agents were based not on their "thoughts" but on specific crimescharged against them. When I asked him about trials before "howling mobs,"such as had been reported abroad, he laughed.

It is a great honor for me to write a preface for the new, PFS（China Society for People's Friendship,mutual regard, and warm memories dating from before the Chinesepeople's Liberation in 1949.
Looking back and forward, I am convinced that China is pur-suing the right course in building a strong and prosperous countryin a rapidly changing world with its complex and sometimes vola-tile developments.
