4-5 unit3

ten ten ten

When I read through the paragraph four and paragraph five, some places attract my attention.

The first place that interrupts me is the second sentence “they want to know that their wok is important and how it fits into the corporate strategy”, in which the word “it” refers to “their work”, “fit into” is a phrase, which means suit, fit. But so (as)far as I know, we don’t use “fit into” ordinarily. What we Familiar to is the kind of phrases like “be fit for”, “fit in with”, which is(are) used frequently in our ordinary writings.

The Paragraph five takes the Compaq Computers for example to tell us the relationship between the quality and efforts of workers and the profitability of a company. In this paragraph, there are no new words for me, but some words are still not so easy to be understood, as they are not comprehended (+as)the common meanings. For example, the word “turnover” in the sentence “…has a low turnover rate among its employees”. Here “turnover” means the rate at which employees leave a company and are replaced by new people. The other example is the word “push” in the sentence “In many companies an atmosphere of constant push would inspire people to seek employment with less pressure somewhere else”. It is not the antonym of “pull”. Instead, here “push” means the pressure of circumstances, activities and so on. But I agree what the sentence says. Generally, people are fond of working in a less pressure environment. too much pressure will make people feel(感覺這個系動詞多餘) tired.

The last place that attracts my attention is the phrase “to the best of their potential” appears in the last sentence. From the dictionary, I know its meaning is “as far as they can”, or in other words, it means “try their best”.
