20世紀70年代末，我國恢復了高考制度。一些高等醫科院校開始嘗試招收六年制外語醫學班，採用了雙語教學。1990年由原白求恩醫科大學等10餘所醫科院校共同編寫，吉林科學技術出版社出版的《人體解剖學》(英文版)、《局部解剖學》(英文版)教材滿足了英語醫學班的教學需要。這兩種英文版教材至今已出到了第三版。
近些年來，一些規模較大的醫科院校開始招收七年制的本一碩連讀學生，並逐年擴大招生規模。2004年教育部又新批准了幾所院校招收八年制本一碩一博連讀學生。這些學生都將採用雙語或英語教學。教學中迫切需要一套既適合中國國情又符合我國教學大綱要求的英文版醫學教材。為滿足這一需求，我社於2003年春夏組織全國30多所大學基礎醫學各相關學科教學第二線直接從事雙語教學的教師編寫了這套基礎醫學雙語教學英文版系列教材。參編人員絕大多數都在國外學習工作多年，既有紮實的專業基礎，又具有較雄厚的英文功底，還具有本專業豐富的教學經驗。
