Educationisnotanend,butameanstoanend.Inotherwords,wedonoteducatechildrenonlyforthepurposeofeducatingthem;ourpurposeistofitthemforlife.Assoonaswerealizethisfact,wewillunderstandthatitisveryimportanttochooseagoodwayofeducationwhichwillreallypreparechildrenforlife.
Inmanymoderncountriesithasforsometimebeenfashionabletothinkthat,byfreeeducationforall--whetherrichorpoor,cleverorstupid--onecansolvealltheproblemsofsocietyandbuildaperfectnation.Butwecanalreadyseethatfreeeducationforallisnotenough:wefindinsuchcountriesafarlargernumberofpeoplewithuniversitydegreesthantherearejobsforthemtofill.Becauseoftheirdegree,theyrefusedtodowhattheythink"low"work;andinfact,workwithhandsisthoughttobedirtyandshamefulinsuchcountries.
Butwehavetounderstandthattheworkofacompletelyuneducatedfarmerismoreimportantthanthatofaprofessorinaway:Wecanlivewithouteducation,butwedieifwehavenofood.Ifnoonecleanedourstreetsandtooktherubbishawayfromourhouses,weshouldgetterriblediseasesinourtowns.Incountries
wheretherearenoservantsbecausenobodyiswillingtodosuchwork,theprofessorshavetowastemuchoftheirtimedoinghousework.
Infact,whenwesaythatallofusmustbeeducatedtofitusforlife,itmeansthatwemustbeeducatedinsuchawaythat,firstly,eachofuscandowhateverjobissuitedtohisbrainandability,andsecondly,thatwecanrealizethatalljobsarenecessarytosociety,andthatitisverybadtobeunwillingtodoone'swork,ortolaughatsomeoneelse's.Onlysuchatypeofeducationcanbecalledvaluabletosociety.
