埃里森·漢尼根1974年3月24日出生於美國華盛頓，她的母親是喬治亞州的一名地產經紀，父親則是密蘇里州的卡車司機，兩歲的時候父母離婚。漢尼根1992年畢業於北好萊塢中學，高中時她是一名單簧管樂手。1999年，漢尼根加盟《美國派》。導演起初希望她出演片中的海茲，但她最後選擇了米歇爾這個角色，因為她認為這個角色會有更大的發揮空間。2003年，漢尼根在《美國派3》中繼續飾演吉姆的女友米歇爾，這對搞笑的情侶終於走進了婚禮的殿堂
