生於倫敦。第二次世界大戰期間，參加勞軍團去表演魔術。戰爭結束，他到牛津大學深造，參加學校劇團及實驗劇團到美國做旅行演出，並為BBC電視導演電視影片《四個正義之人》，又兼寫影評。1960年導演的短片《旅程終點》（Terminus)獲61年坎城電影節最佳短片獎。62年導演第一部劇情長片《一夕風流恨事多》，獲得柏林影展銀熊獎。1967年導演的《瘋狂佳人》獲同年美國國際論壇雜誌的最佳影片獎。68年的《午夜牛郎》得到奧斯卡最佳影片、最佳導演金像獎，1971年導演的《血腥的禮拜天》（Sunday Bloody Sunday ）榮獲英國電影學院最佳影片、最佳導演獎，並獲得柏林影展天主教電影獎。
