發展製作
《森靈傳說》於2015年8月在孩之寶的2016年娛樂計畫被首次提出，其中包括了新角色嘉蘭金菊的一張圖片。
《彩虹搖滾》副導演和《友誼大賽》的主導演——Ishi Rudell曾拿《森靈傳說》開玩笑，當在Twitter上被問起小馬國女孩是否會有新作時，Rudell回復道：“是的，很有可能。”孩之寶工作室董事長Stephen Davis在2015年的MIPJunior發言證實小馬國女孩的第四部正在製作。
電影的概念在紐倫堡紐倫堡玩具展被首次暗示。
“小馬國女孩傳奇”的標題與WeLoveFine中的同人畫作“小馬國傳奇”相似。
《森靈傳說》的製作工作在《友誼大賽》的收尾時期就已經開始了，並且持續了“將近一年半的時間”，在2016年8月18日才正式完工。
據Katrina Hadley說，影片中有一段關於天琴和糖糖的片段被剪掉了。
導演Rudell把水晶晚會和歌曲《Legend You Were Meant To Be》區間的服裝設計工作交給了副導演Katrina和藝術總監Jeremy Tin，但後來又附加道：“那是一個團隊的努力成果”。
電影由Jason Armstrong、Jeff Bittle、Jennifer Davreux、Gloria Jenkins和 Dalton Grant分鏡，由Tori Grant、Colleen Lofstrom、Selena Marchetti和Desirae Salmark校對。根據電影光碟和藍光視頻的註解：
•午夜閃閃夢境的背景、森靈營地帳篷的內部、日夜的概念圖和小蝶的貓頭鷹由Madison Tuff設計。
•雲寶黛茜做仰臥起坐的背景是Lofstrom特意添加的。

劇情簡介
坎特拉高中全校到Camp Everfree露營，卻意外發現有股奇特的力量一直讓營區發生怪事，Sunset Shimmer也發現Gloriosa Daisy和Timber Spruce兄妹之間並不和睦，因為Gloriosa Daisy對魔法的濫用，導致自己被魔法侵蝕，使其他人陷入了危險之中。關鍵時刻，Twilight Sparkle在其他五位主角，尤其是Sunset Shimmer的幫助下戰勝了自己內心的黑暗面-Midnight Sparkle，獲得了新的魔法能力，拯救了無盡森林營地。

Twilight Sparkle(暮光閃閃、紫悅）

註：此Twilight Sparkle 是人類世界的。
暮光閃閃Twilight Sparkle原是水晶預科學院一名成績優異的學生，她勤奮刻苦，仿佛無所不知，因此她站在了學校最頂尖的位置。但她對於科學與高等數學過於著迷，一心想要進入埃弗頓獨立研究計畫，以至於無心與身邊的同學們交往，這使得所有同學都疏遠她，甚至故意刁難她、對她惡語相向。
友誼大賽後轉校來到坎特拉高中。雖然友誼大賽過去了，但她仍然沒辦法戰勝自己內心的黑暗面-Midnight Sparkle，之後在其他五位主角，尤其是Sunset Shimmer的幫助下戰勝了自己內心的黑暗面-Midnight Sparkle，獲得了全新的變身形態和魔法。

餘暉爍爍Sunset Shimmer是來自於小馬利亞的一匹橘黃色的獨角獸，有著紅黃相間的鬃毛。在小馬國女孩第一部中是一個野心極強的反派人物，後被來自小馬國的Twilight Sparkle 和其他五位主角打敗，改邪歸正。
Sunset Shimmer在第二部中痛改前非，卻被同學們因為以前的行為而受人排擠。無意中發現了塞壬們的邪惡魔法，並利用魔法書通知小馬Twilight Sparkle。因為中了塞壬的蠱惑而以為M6不需要她，開始自卑。最後，在M6的真心鼓勵下終於和M6一起打敗了塞壬三人組。【M7正式成立】
在EG3中Sunsset Shimmer 已成功獲取M5和其他學生的信任，變得自信，是學校的支柱。然而，她們卻迎來了友誼大賽，跟水晶預科學校的學生們比賽。她發現了人類Twilight Sparkle 的那個魔法追蹤儀器。兩人的關係一直很複雜。直到倒數第二項比賽結束，Sunsset Shimmer 就開始對著Twilight Sparkle 大吼，告訴她不要自以為是利用自己不知道的東西來傷害自己的朋友。最後，利用朋友們的彩虹魔法變身的Sunset Shimmer 感化了黑化的人類Twilight，兩人互相理解，成為最親密的朋友，人暮也轉來了坎特拉高中。
在EG4里【也就是本季】，Sunsset Shimmer發現了Twilight Sparkle的夢魘，一直鼓勵她，告訴她自己也有這種經歷，沒什麼好怕的。在有一次Twilight Sparkle夜晚離開營地勸回她的時候，突然Timber Spruce出現了，嚇壞了他們，於是，對Twilight Sparkle有好感的Timber Spruce準備親自接Twilight Sparkle會帳篷的時候，誤會了Timber Spruce身上的魔法光就斷定他是一個想把營員們趕走的壞蛋。Sunsset Shimmer發現了M5都對各自的魔法恐懼，於是Sunsset Shimmer就唱了一首非常好聽的歌兒，來鼓勵M5，在大家的努力下修好了要送給無盡森林的‘‘禮物’’。當餘暉正要去找人類Twilight Sparkle的時候，撞到了Flash Sentry，Flash Sentry開始問她的情緒為什麼這么擔憂，Sunsset Shimmer告訴了他原因，可Flash Sentry沒有聽懂，但他聽懂的是Sunsset Shimmer開始對自己的朋友著想了，問她的進步十分高興，可Sunsset卻沒有注意到Flash,把Gloriosa Daisy看成了Timber Spruce，就追了上去，叫上了Twilight。可是卻萬萬沒想到既然是Gloriosa Daisy，她利用了讀心術知道了事情原因，並勸她不要被迷惑了，可誰知後果不堪構想，Gloriosa Daisy反而還變成了惡魔，最後Sunsset找到了M5，一同鼓勵Twilight，變了身，拯救了無盡森林。
