印度簡史“劍橋國別簡史叢書”是劍橋大學出版社自20世紀八九十年代始陸續推出的一套插圖版國家簡史叢書。叢書作者均為英國、美國、澳大利亞等國的歷史學教授或知名專家。他們用通俗易懂的語言向讀者介紹了所述國家的政治、經濟、文化和社會歷史變遷。圖書權威、通俗，可讀性強。叢書出版後獲得了巨大成功，有的品種重印多達10餘次。
《印度簡史》為叢書中的一本。本書簡要介紹了印度從莫臥爾人時期至今的歷史，其中包括18世紀晚期到1947年印度獨立，印度作為英屬殖民地的歷史。本書最後一章介紹了20世紀90年代印度經歷的一些重要事件，如經濟變革、宗教民族主義，以及印度作為一個擁有核武器的國家出現在世人面前等等。本書重點講述印度真政治結構的演變與發展。
